Three diverse artists explore Subtleties and Intensities at The Chocolate Church Gallery

The Chocolate Church Arts Center at 804 Washington Street announces a new gallery exhibition: Subtleties and Intensities, which opened with a reception in the Gallery at 804 Washington St., Bath, ME on Friday, October 16, 1998.

Subtleties and intensities is a group show featuring the sculpture of Kim Bernard, and landscape paintings by Jan ter Weele and James Wolford. The exhibition runs from October 16 through November 21, 1998.

Ceramic sculptor, Kim Bernard, of North Berwick, draws her inspiration from the natural world and the collective consciousness. Her powerful totemic sculptures honor the female, the mystical and the spiritual. Combining pattern, rhythm, goddess imagery and organic structures, she searches to create forms that speak to our center. Bernard is inspired by nature and the fullness, fertility and sensuality of the female form.

Painter Jan ter Weele, of Falmouth, uses color as an expressive medium. While his paintings are representational, ter Weele's goal is to explore levels of meaning beyond representations, some of them emotional, others painterly. His work is influenced by Cezanne, van Gogh, Matisse, the Fauves, German Expressionists, De Kooning, and more recently by Richard Diebenkorn, among others.

Painter James Wolford, of Rockland, captures the essence of light in \his work. Using architectural elements as the subject matter, Wolford paints light that exists for only a short time using shadow to establish a feeling of drama.With the use of brilliant, intense, and surreal colors, Wolford transforms the mundane by pointing out its inherent beauty.
