Also, the Museum's Sunday at SAM Program will welcome Dr. Eldon Van Liere of Ann Arbor, Michigan to discuss the etchings of James McNeill Whistler Sunday, March 14, 1999. This Exhibit is made possible with the support of the Saginaw Community Enrichment Commission.
Quoted from Syracuse University, "The quality and importance of James McNeill Whistler's work is matched only by the accounts of his personal life; a life that made him famous (or infamous) in England and on the continent. Where Whistler's paintings were a subject for harsh criticism, his etchings and drypoints garnered for him a contemporary reputation as the most important etcher since Rembrandt, The prints in this exhibition trace Whistler's early development in France, his move to London where he printed his portfolio Sixteen Etchings of the Thames and other subjects, and his trips to Venice where he created his famous "nocturnes". Almost single-handedly Whistler redefined the art of printmaking and was a central figure in Europe's Etching Revival of the second half of the 19th century."
