4th Annual Mission Outdoor Painting Festival
In continuation of the tradition of painting the Mission, Joan Irvine Smith Fine Arts, Inc. and the California Art Club co-sponsored the 4th annual Mission Outdoor Painting Festival the week of August 10 - 16, 1998. Over 100 artist members of CAC participated in the plein air event held on the Mission grounds.
California Art Club President Peter Adams stated, "This competition is a significant event. It not only expresses our deep-felt reverence for Califomia's unique heritage, but also allows our artists the opportunity to paint together in comradeship among magnificent surroundings."
At the end of the week, a panel of distinguished judges selected the best paintings and awarded the artists cash prizes totaling $10,000. The awards ceremony was held August15 on the Mission grounds. Many of the paintings were sold directly by the artists that afternoon and also on August 16.
In conjunction with the Festival, the Mission hosted an
exhibition of 1997 award winners and selected entrants in the Rancho Room
gallery.
