Vermont Artist wins award in National Exhibition
at the Bennington Center for the Arts
A Vermont artist was the winner of the Best of Show Award presented
in August, 1999 at the opening of the American Academy of Women Artists
annual exhibition at the Bennington Center for the Arts. Dorset artist Nancy
Howe received the top honor with her painting Slow Rising which was
selected from more than 48 two-dimensional works by artists from around
the country. Elizabeth MacQueen of California won the Best Sculpture Award
with her life-size bronze image of Persephone and Kim Shaklee's sculpture
Spellbound received the Purchase Award.
Many artists were in attendance for the opening of the
group's fifth annual exhibition. Each of the thirty signature members contributed
work to the show at the Center, sending both larger and smaller works. A
number of associate members' works were also selected for the show which
totals almost 100 paintings and bronzes.
The group started five years ago with a goal of projecting
a new image of "the artist" and elevating the 
perception of
women in visual arts. Members come from California, Texas, Wyoming, Montana
and Vermont each year to present their work. "In the past this group
has held its exhibitions in Arizona and California. We are pleased to host
such an outstanding group of female artists on its first trip East",
says Elizabeth Small, gallery director. "The exhibit includes a variety
of subjects by very talented artists including Nancy Howe, Martha Saudek,
Sherry Blanchard Stuart and Tucker Baily."
Work in the show includes still-lifes, landscapes and figurative
work in many media with all work being for sale. The show runs through Labor
Day, Tuesday through Sunday from 11 am - 5 pm at the Bennington Center for
the Arts.
