Since the early 1970's the Arkansas Arts Center has acquired
exceptional drawings in all media, styles and periods. This distinctive
selection of works
from
the Center's collection includes traditional drawings in pencil and pen
and ink, as well as watercolor and acrylic. Each work is a complete statement
typical of the artist's style, technique and subject matter. Thomas Hart
Benton, who is represented in the exhibition, has stated, "Drawings
are not only objective records, but carry a full train of personal associations
which enables me to return in imagination to the places and people they
represent and live over my experience. If my murals come to have an enduring
life, it will be wholly because their form was directed by drawings made
in the heat of direct experience."
Twentieth Century American Drawings is organized according to several themes: Scenes of New York, Portraits, Nature, The Figure, Painterly Abstraction, Geometric Abstraction and Still Life. Among the artists represented are Milton Avery, Carolyn Brady, Charles Burchfield, Robert Cottingham, Stuart Davis, Richard Diebenkorn, Jim Dine, Arthur Dove, Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Francis, Philip Guston, Edward Hopper, Roy Lichtenstein, Reginald Marsh, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Charles Sheeler, Wayne Thiebaud and Mark Tobey.
