Athos Menaboni

The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art is hosting the largest retrospective exhibition of Athos Menaboni from through Sunday, June 27, 1999. Athos Menaboni (1895 - 1990), who has been hailed as a twentieth-century Audubon, began his career by painting murals; he later combined his painting skills with his hobby, the study of birds, thus becoming a bird illustrator. His oil paintings captured the beauty of nature. During his career which spanned over sixty years, he painted over one hundred and fifty species of American birds in their native surroundings.

Although born in Italy, Menaboni lived in Atlanta most of his life with his wife, Sara, on a five-acre woodland sanctuary complete with extensive aviaries. His work brought him international fame and numerous awards. His paintings appeal to wildlife lovers, naturalists, art collectors and ornithologists alike. Although Menaboni is best known for his bird paintings, equally impressive are his botanicals, seascapes, landscapes, fantasies, murals and mosaics. Over one hundred of his finest paintings are featured in the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art' s exhibition.
