Arts Club of Washington Presents David
FeBland
On Friday, February 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, the Arts Club of Washington
will host an opening reception for artist David FeBland and members of the
Club's Painting Workshop. FeBland's collection of contemporary oil on linen
cityscapes entitled City of Rhythm will be on display in the Main
Gallery. In the M&M Gallery, the Arts Club will host works by the Arts
Club's Painting Workshop which is celebrating its fourteenth year under
the guidance of Gladys Kazigian. Both shows will run from January 27 through
February 28, 1999.
David FeBland's vibrant visions of contemporary urbanism
come from an academic background in political science, environmental design,
and landscape architecture. His works explore the complex issues of individualism
and mass identity and portray a variety of groups and subcultures in their
ceaseless competition for space and power. FeBland describes his work as
"invented realities" and says, "I take the guy no one remembers
and build a painting around him...I elevate him from the anonymity of peripheral
bit player in the American mainstream." Ferdinand Protzman of The
Washington Post writes,"FeBland's oil paintings of New York City
catch all the hustle, bustle and in-your-face vibrancy of the Big Apple
in high-voltage color and a fresh, realistic style." Art critic Mark
St. John Erickson calls FeBland's work "...painterly, whimsical, jarring
and politically savvy all at once...every painter would like to pack this
much abundance into a single work." 
The Arts Club of Washington, founded in 1916, is a non-profit,
tax-exempt organization dedicated to the promotion of the arts in the nation's
capital. The Club is located in the historic home of President James Monroe
at 2017 "I" Street, NW, Washington, DC. The Club's galleries are
open to the public Tuesday-Friday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am
to 2:00 pm, and Sunday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
