William Parker Little, Columbus Pictorialist,
1850-1937
Nearly 70 years after his photographs
were first exhibited at the Museum, the work of William Parker Little returns.
In 1931, the year the Museum opened its doors at 480 East Broad Street,
the first photography exhibition titled First AIl-Ohio Salon of Pictorial
Photographers included two photographs by this Columbus native. Now
the exhibition William Parker Little, Columbus Pictorialist, 1850-1937,
comprising approximately 100 of Little's photographs, will be on view in
the Museum's Ross Photography Center from April 3 - June 6, 1999.
William. Parker Little worked in the soft-focus, atmospheric
style known as Pictorialism, popular at the turn of 
the century. This exhibition illustrates the extent
to which Little also experimented with straight photography, producing countless
unmanipulated, documentary-style pictures. The exhibition will include Columbus
sites such as The Ohio Stadium (very possibly the first autochrome ever
made of the new stadium, soon after its construction in the 1920s), as well
as many other examples of Columbus and its environs, including Broad Street
under construction and Hayden Falls. Left: Visitors

This rare and comprehensive collection was discovered by
guest curator Paul Hooge at an auction in Newark, 
Ohio in 1992. In all, Hooge retrieved 600 vintage
prints, 2,500 negatives, 40 autochromes, and a large number of glass slides
- a treasure trove whose artistic value nearly went unrecognized. The Museum
acknowledges this important and serendipitous discovery by featuring selections
from Little's record of life in Columbus during the early part of the 20th
century.
Paul Hooge will conduct a curator talk in conjunction with
the exhibition on Sunday, April 18 at 1 pm. Walk-in tours will be held Sunday,
April 11 at 2 pm; Friday, May 7 at noon; Sunday, May 16 at 2 pm; Friday,
May 28 at noon; and Sunday, June 6 at 2 pm. The curator talk and tours are
free with Museum admission.
