Mission San Juan Capistrano to Present Art of Alice Nathan and Augustus Dunbier in Upcoming Exhibitions

Mission San Juan Capistrano will present for the first-time in a California museum, exhibitions by artists Alice Nathan, May 14-June 14, 1999 and Augustus W. Dunbier, June 18-July 23, 1999. The Dunbier exhibition will feature California landscape canvasses painted in pre-war years.

Alice Nathan was reared on a working cattle ranch in the Sierra Mountains of California. Many of her paintings are of American cowboys of the past and present. She also frequently paints still lifes. According to the artist, her aim is "to transmit my love of nature through fresh, bold color and creative brushwork." She studied at the California Art Institute in Los Angeles. She has lectured, taught workshops and demonstrated at gallery openings and art clubs, and has had her work displayed at prestigious galleries across the nation. Her work is part of the permanent educational collections at the Smithsonian Institute and Pentagon buildings in Washington, D.C.

Augustus Dunbier (1888-1977) was a prolific oil painter, known for his colorful landscapes, still life, portraits and figures. Born in Nebraska, much of Dunbier's work featured Midwestern landscapes in the impressionist style, although he painted throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe. Dunbier studied art for seven years at the Royal Art Academy in Dusseldorf, Germany, and a year at the Chicago Art Institute. Like Nathan now does, Dunbier taught art over his 70 year career, once telling his students, "You want to paint the mood of the day. Painting is like music, you need to orchestrate it. If it's a rainy day, paint what you see. . .It's a matter of attitude, you manipulate the colors in order to create the mood."

Exhibition hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the Rancho Room. Exhibitions are free with admission.
