A Harvest of Devotions: The Farming Heritage Paintings of Aaron F. St. John

From April 9 through May 10, 1999 the Rancho Room at Mission San Juan Capistrano will present the exhibition A Harvest of Devotions: The Farming Heritage Paintings of Aaron F. St. John. An artist's reception is planned for 1 - 4 p.m., Saturday, April 24th.
St. John is an Artist Member and Chairman of the San Diego
Regional Chapter of the California Art Club,
and has participated annually in the CAC's California Art Club Outdoor Painting
Festival sponsored at the Mission by Joan Irvine Smith Fine Arts Inc.. One
of his festival paintings entered Mrs. Smith's private collection, and the
show will also feature a few paintings of the Mission itself. 
St. John received his B.A. degree in illustration in 1977 from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and studied anatomy at UCLA. An accomplished artist, St. John's work features rural images from 19th century America -- farmers, pioneers and cowboys, with their livestock. Typical images include farmers weeding, plowing and working in the fields, performing "human-scale" agricultural tasks, as opposed to machinery-driven. (left: Aaron F. St. John, Untitled)
St. John is active in promoting efforts to retain, revive and popularize historical agricultural methods, and has worked on living history farms in the eastern United States. St. John has both taught painting and has displayed his work at prominent galleries across the country. He has been featured in American Artist and Western Horseman magazines.
