Atelier du Nord: A School of Classical Realism
On the north shore
of Lake Superior is a small, private summer art school where serious artists
come seeking classes taught by the master instructors. Training that was
lost in the 1930's is being kept alive by a few, dedicated people.
The Atelier du Nord School of Classical Realism is the
only 3-month summer program in the nation offering traditional master-to-student
instruction from Beginning Oil Painting; Portraiture; Figure; Landscapes;
Illustration and Still Life.
Instruction is intense and personal with the teachers directing
each student, one-on-one, fitting the teaching to each student's ability.
All of the instructors are full-time professional artists and teach in full
4-year atelier programs. The instructors have been trained in the traditions
of the Boston School of American Impressionists and the French Academy.
Classes are deliberately kept small (4-8 students per classs) to ensure
the quality of instruction received.

Atelier du Nord is located at 1066 Highway 61 East, Two Harbors, MN 55616.
From top to bottom: Instructor's paintings including Mike Coyle, Untitled (Still Life); CeCeile Hartleib, Would You Like to Join Me, Madame?, oil on linen, 19 x 22 inches, collection of the artist, Male Torso, oil on linen, 19 15 inches, collection of Char Tidball, Portrait of Beth and Jackie, oil on linen, 30 x 40 inches, collection of Dr. Scott and Laurie Gauer.
