Solo exhibitions for
two artists selected by Eliza Rathbone, Curator, The Phillips Collection,
will run from March 2-31, 2001 at the Arts Club of Washington. The public
is invited to an attend an opening reception on Friday, March 2, from 6:30-8:30
pm for Lisa Egeli's recent landscapes, "Places Known and Unknown"
in the first floor Monroe Gallery, and Rose Weinstock, whose theme and variations,
"Mini Windows" can be seen in the upstairs McFeely Gallery.
Egeli,
a member of a prominent family of Maryland artists, began her career as
an illustrator, but soon earned a reputation as a portraitist and painter
of large-scale landscapes. Firmly ensconced in the celebrated tradition
of American Luminism, these depictions of sublime natural settings suggest
both a hard-edged, crystalline
reality and otherworldly visions. Titles such as "End of Summer"
and "Almost Alone" underscore the elegiac poetry inherent in reflective
surfaces of water and sky. Ms. Egeli, who has exhibited extensively in Washington
and Maryland, has been the recipient of numerous commissions. Her works
can be seen in both public and private collections nationwide. (left:

It is the window, even more important than the world beyond
its confines, which is Rose Weinstock's vehicle for the evocation of interior
and exterior states. Redefining subject matter that has entranced artists
from Vermeer to Bonnard, Weinstock's nuances of mood are conveyed through
formal elements including cropping and enigmatic spatial construction, as
well as the interplay of chiaroscuro, light and color. Paintings by this
award winning New York based artist, whose career spans over 15 years, have
been exhibited throughout the world. Larry Rivers, Techpartners International
and the Bloomfield Cultural Center are included in the list of patrons and
collections that have acquired her work.
