Anita Philyaw and Susan E. Heiderer
On Thursday, October 5, 2000, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Arts Club of Washington will host an opening reception for solo exhibitions by artists Anita Philyaw and Susan E. Heiderer. Both exhibitions are part of the 2000-2001 season juried by Eliza Rathbone, Chief Curator of The Phillips Collection. Anita Philyaw's collection is entitled Roots in the Rock: Paintings by Anita Philyaw in the Monroe Gallery. Susan E. Heiderer will show a collection of works titled Poetry In The Nude in the McFeeley Gallery.
Most of Anita Philyaw's dramatic figurative paintings are in vivid colors and depict people of color at work or in contemplation, set against abstract backgrounds. This established Washington artist's works are acrylic on canvas, and sometimes incorporate elements of collage. The Arts Club is honored to be the first to exhibit her new silkscreen print titled "Sister!" This limited edition has been hand pulled by one of America's master printmaker's, Lou Stovall at Workshop Inc. Anita Philyaw has been commissioned by Absolut as part of the Absolut Expressions Collection, which features 14 commissioned artworks by African-American artists. Her works are in many prominent public and private collections across the United States and Hong Kong. She is also represented by major galleries such as Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans.
Colorado-based Susan E. Heiderer's paintings explore the human figure in different intellectual and philosophical frames. Since they are primarily a meditative response to the spaces surrounding the forms, they must be approached as visual poetics. She uses colors, lines, shape and textures to generate a viewer's response beyond simple narrative and into the more complex sphere of poetics. Ms. Heiderer has exhibited and won awards in the Midwest, Washington, DC, Italy, and France. Her work is also featured in collections around the world.
