The Private Eye: Walter Anderson from Individual Collections

"The Private Eye: Walter Anderson from Individual Collections" will continue through July 23, 2000 at the Waiter Anderson Museum, WAMA, in Ocean Springs, MS. The exhibition reflects the perspective of many collectors rather than that of a single collector or that of a large institutional collection. The eclectic show offers the viewer a unique opportunity to see Anderson work not readily available to the general public.

Assembling and staging the exhibit has been an adventure. Works of art have been obtained from generous collectors from as far as Las Vegas and New York as well as locally and span the three major periods of Walter Inglis Anderson's career: Ocean Springs, 1923-1939; Oldfields, 1940-1947; Horn Island, 1948-1965. The show also represents several of Anderson's most frequently used media: watercolor and drawing, wood sculpture, and pottery. Breaking with the Museum's traditional practice of using whitewashed oak framing and off-white mats for Anderson's paintings and drawings, the pieces will be exhibited in the choice of framing selected by the collector thus reflecting a wide range of personal preference and response to a given environment. Some of the owners had interesting and colorful stories to share which will be incorporated into the wall text beside the piece.
