The Age of Steam and Steel: A Retrospective of the Art of lan Marshall
January 10 through March 31, 2000
lan Marshall is a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists and the author of three books of ship paintings, "Passage East," "Armored Ships," and "Ironclads and Paddlers."
His
work hangs in the permanent collections of the US Naval Academy Museum at
Annapolis, the royal Naval Museum at Portsmouth, the Scottish United Services
Museum at Edinburgh Castle, and the Maine Maritime Museum. His work is shown
in six of the leading marine galleries in America, and has hung in numerous
maritime exhibitions on both sides of the Atlantic. This will be his first
exhibit on the Pacific Coast. (left: USS Connecticut, and Ships

This exhibit of 23 watercolors of historic steamships by Ian Marshal represents a milestone for the Museum; it's the first time that images of ships without sails have appeared on the Guest Artist Gallery walls.
The analogy that Marshall has "picked a horse and is riding it" couldn't be more true. These 20-odd steamship paintings are but a mere sample of the more than 300 he has completed, many of which have found their way into private collections, museums, and the major maritime galleries on both sides of the Atlantic. His work hangs in the permanent collections of the US Naval Museum in Annapolis, the Royal Naval Museum in Portsmouth, the Scottish United Services in Edinburgh, and the Maine Maritime Museum. This exhibit is his first on the Pacific coast.
Marshall hasn't met a steam engine he doesn't like, and his travels have taken him into the engine rooms of numerous ships around the world. Born in County Fife in Scotland, as a boy he accompanied an uncle on Coast Guard inspections of nearby vessels. Needing to keep the wolf from the door, he and his wife, Jean, formed an architecture practice which took them to Scotland, Greece, and Botswana, where they lived for 14 years. The Marshalls currently reside on Mount Desert Island in Maine.
