Once Upon A Picture: The Art of Marc Brown
The Erie Art Museum proudly presents Once Upon A Picture: The
Art of Marc Brown, an exhibition of original illustrations by beloved
author and illustrator, Marc Brown, which opens December 31, 1999 (during
Erie's New Years Eve event First Night Erie) and runs through April 16,
2000. (left: from Oh Kojo! How Could You, c. 1984)
Brown, an Erie, Pennsylvania native, born in 1946, is the
creator of the very popular Arthur Adventure series,
which also developed into the PBS television series Arthur. The exhibit
will showcase many of his delightful pencil and pen and ink illustrations,
colored with watercolors, that feature the ever-popular characters and stories
he has created. (right: from Go West, Swamp Monsters, 1985)
For
over thirty years, Brown has been illustrating children's books. In addition,
he has been writing children's stories along with his wife, Laurie Krasny-Brown,
for over twenty years. Brown was originally inspired by the books of Maurice
Sendak to illustrate warm and humorous stories that offer realistic subject
matter for children and involve family, friends, and school. Much of his
art come from the places he's lived in such as Erie, Martha's Vineyard,
and Hingham, Massachusetts. While Brown has done numerous illustrations
for a variety of children's books, Arthur's Nose was his first solo
performance as author and illustrator. Other favorites among children include
the D. W. series, the Rhymes series, the Dinosaur series.

This exhibition is supplemented by a variety of educational programming made possible by a grant from the William M. and Frances Schuster Endowment Fund of Gannon University. The exhibition is supported through a grant from the Erie Arts Endowment and is sponsored by Saint Vincent Children's Miracle Network and by First Night Erie. (right: from Arthur Baby Sits, 1992)
