Background

During 2022-2024 we have accessed and added to our website over 1,200 images of copyright-free artworks from Wikimedia Commons or directly from the online collections of museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Project progress

In 2022 a TFAO volunteer retained and paid a freelancer* to help add content to to our Distinguished Artists catalog In 2024 we continue adding more images to our Distinguished Artists catalog via volunteer service. Volunteers** receive credit for each posted image.

*Freelancer's job data sources and budget

Data sources: 1. America's Distinguished Artists Catalog, 2. List of Wikimedia Commons Museum Source (WCMS) pages with links to them. Budget: $200 for whole job or $67 per approved batch as described below.

Job procedure:

1. Within each WCMS page for a qualified museum, search through the image files in the museum's collection to find matching artists in the America's Distinguished Artists catalog. There may be just a few - or dozens - of thumbnails listed by a museum. There may be many matches or just a few. See below the list of qualified museums that have WCMS pages for American paintings in their collections. I will add more museums and types of artworks as needed.

Following is a screenshot of an example of a WCMS page for a qualified museum that has four .jpg thumbnail images.

Following is an image of a part of an America's Distinguished Artists page with a .jpg image of a Ceclia Beaux painting with an accompanying label.

2. For each matching artist found:

a. Verify that there are less than three WCMS .jpgs posted in the America's Distinguished Artists entry for the artist. Each WCMS .jpg posted will say Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons in the label. If less than three, continue steps b through e.

b. Open the WCMS link for the matched artist painting.

c. Verify that the painting is in the public domain and that it is not already posted in the America's Distinguished Artists Catalog. Here is icon indicating that the painting is in the public domain:

d. Copy the WCMS full size (not the thumbnail size) .jpg image, not to exceed 800 pixels in width, and paste it into a draft email addressed to johnphazeltine@gmail.com. Please only send .jpg images; other image formats can't be accepted. Please do not send a message via UpWork containing .jpgs and label text. Only emails can be used because .jpg and label data must be from your emails to me in order to be copied and pasted from my emails forwarded to TFAO to be then processed for posting into the America's Distinguished Artists Catalog. Keep track of .jpg images for each artist. There is a limit of one additional .jpg per artist for this entire job.

Following is a screenshot of the upper portion of a WCMS page with a usable .jpg image.

e. Excerpt portions of the WCMC .jpg's accompanying text for the painting to create a label in TFAO's approved format and type the label under the .jpg in the email draft.

Following is a screenshot of the lower portion of that WCMS page containing relevant text to be used in typing the label.

The resultant label for the image in entered into the draft email using TFAO's format. For an example of the label format see the below screenshot:

3. Continue the above steps until there are seven .jpg images with accompanying labels in the email draft.

4. Send the completed email containing seven sets of  .jpg images & accompanying labels.

5. For each batch of 5 emails sent (cumulative 7 x 5 = 35 .jpg & label sets) we will review that batch of emails for accuracy.

6. Wait until we have contacted you to indicate my approval of the batch before proceeding further.

7. after our approval of my most recently received batch of five emails, continue the job until three batches are approved by me (cumulatively 35 x 3 = 105 .jpg & label sets)

8. We will them pay $200 for the completed job. If you do not wish to continue the job after first batch, approval, we will make a partial payment as follows: $200 / 3 = $67 per approved batch.

**Dear TFAO reader:

There was a paid contract let for the above work. It was finished successfully, and since completion, additional images have been found by volunteers for select artists for whom images had yet to be found.

We would very much appreciate your volunteer help in finding more copyright-free Wikipedia Commons images to match with texts.

If you wish to help as a volunteer, please send an email to info@tfaoi.org and a copy to johnphazeltine@gmail.com.
