Screening and selection
The first screen of online American representational art texts is by word count. Generally, the listed articles, essays and other texts contain over 600 words. Texts are then screened for two additional objective factors: availability online without charge to readers and the appearance of not being posted temporarily. Further selection is based on subjective factors such as filling gaps in knowledge not yet covered in the Traditional Fine Arts Organization (TFAO) catalogue Topics in American Art and other catalogues, overall readability, intellectual merit, and other factors. Certain online exhibitions of Art Museums Galleries and Art Centers plus Academies, Associations, Ateliers and Societies are listed when other criteria were met. Commercial book sellers and publishers placing excerpts of books online are listed when other criteria are met.
Lists of brief captions for art objects in museum collections are excluded. Also excluded are descriptions of institutions and their services.
