Dr. John R. Lane Appointed Dallas Museum of Art's Eugene McDermott Director

The Dallas Museum of Art welcomed Dr. John R. Lane as the Museum's Eugene McDermott Director in February 1999. His arrival came at a pivotal time in the DMA's history as it is poised to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2003.

Since joining the DMA, Dr. Lane has presided over the presentation of major exhibitions, several of which were organized by the DMA. They include Brice Marden, Work of the 1990s: Paintings, Drawings, and Prints, a critically acclaimed exhibit of recent work by the contemporary artist, which is now on a national tour, and Ancient Gold Jewelry from the Dallas Museum of Art, an exhibition of the DMA's renowned collection of gold jewelry from Greek, Etruscan, and Roman civilizations.

He was instrumental in facilitating the return to the Museum of Dr. Eleanor Jones Harvey as Curator of American Art.

Dr. Lane came to the DMA after a successful 10-year tenure as Director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), where he led the institution through the most dramatic period of growth in its 64-year history. Under his directorship, the museum built its new 235,000-square-foot home, designed by renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta, and concurrently completed a $95 million capital campaign. In its first year in the new building, SFMOMA attracted more than 800,000 visitors and nearly tripled its membership to over 30,000. Under Dr. Lane's leadership, the Museum also doubled the size of its permanent collection to 16,000 objects. Prior to joining SFMOMA, Dr. Lane served as Director of the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh for seven years and as Assistant Director for Curatorial Affairs at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Dr. Lane received both a Ph.D. and M.A. in Fine Arts from Harvard University, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. from Williams College. He is married to Inge-Lise Eckmann.
