Hearst Art Gallery of Saint Mary's College Appoints Carrie Brewster as Director

The Hearst Art Gallery of Saint Mary's College is delighted to announce the appointment of Carrie Brewster as its new Director. Brewster, who arrived September 1, 1999 has been the Director of the University of Guam's fine arts galleries for the past seven years.

Under her administration, the Isla Center for the Arts was converted from a private museum to a division of the University of Guam; annual attendance rose from less than 1,000 visitors a year to nearly 20,000 this year. During each of her seven years, the Center has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. She has received wide praise as the curator of a number of exhibitions featuring Oceanic, Asian and Latin American art.

The Hearst Art Gallery's new director also taught studio and art history courses at the University of Guam, served as a consultant to the Guam History Museum and the Guam Council for the Arts and Humanities, and is the former director of the Santa Fe Community College Gallery in Gainesville, Florida. Brewster, who has an M.F.A. in ceramics and printmaking from the University of Florida and a B.F.A. from Carleton College in Minnesota, began her career as an exhibition designer for the Florida State Museum and the University of Florida Library and is fluent in Spanish, French and Portuguese.
