Significant American Paintings Given to the Muscarelle Museum of Art
Gene A. (William and Mary, 1952) and Mary A. Burns, whose generous art acquisitions endowment fund has enabled the Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William and Mary to acquire ten important American and European paintings over the past three years, have recently agreed to donate fourteen paintings from their own collection to the Museum. These significant nineteenth and twentieth century works have been on loan to the Museum for the past five years.
"While generous loans of prominent objects are always greatly appreciated, it is of course advantageous to have such works to become gifts to the permanent collection," said Museum Director Bonnie Kelm. "Works in the permanent collection become more fully incorporated in the Museum's educational, exhibitions, and research programs, because we know that they will always be a part of the Museum. Special projects and publications are planned around works in the collection, as are ongoing research initiatives. We are very grateful to the Burns for being such exemplary supporters and for recognizing the Museum's need to build a meaningful and cohesive painting collection."
The gift includes fourteen works by the following American artists: Reynolds Beal (1866-1951), Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908), Herman Herzog (1831-1932), Anna E. Meltzer (1896-1976), Robert Emmett Owen (1878-1957), Milne Ramsey (1847-1915), Frederick Judd Waugh (1861-1940), Thomas Worthington Whittredge(1820-1910), and Guy Carlton Wiggins(1883-1962).
