"The Endicott Street Pictures," an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Stephanie Kay, opens Tuesday, April 13 and runs through Sunday, May 7, 1999 at the Sherman Gallery, 775 Commonwealth Avenue, 2nd floor, Boston. Left: I see Dust Rise, oil on canvas, 1999,. 60 x 120 inches

The exhibition includes figurative and non-figurative images in imagined domains. It marks a crucial transition, with Kay returning to the figure -- including self-portraits -- after nearly a decade of work depicting car parts and other non-traditional subjects. Kay cites Renaissance painting, Aeschylus's The Suppliants, and the connections between man and machine as major influences in her work.

"The Endicott Street Pictures" draws its name from the North End studio in which Kay has worked for the past eight years -- a studio from which she was recently forced to leave so that the building could be converted to luxury condominiums.
