On Location in Malibu 2006: Paintings by the California Art Club

May 20 - September 3, 2006

The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA, will present On Location in Malibu 2006: Paintings by the California Art Club from May 20 through September 3, 2006.

On Location in Malibu 2006 consists of paintings depicting Malibu and which were painted over the course of the last year by members of the California Art Club. Some of the paintings present familiar scenes in the spirit of the vintage California Impressionist style. Others offer unexpected and novel views of the region, drawing inspiration from film, photography, and more recent styles in contemporary culture. The works of art explore not only the picturesque beaches, coastline, canyons, and mountains, but also the daily life in the coastal community between Los Angeles and the Ventura County line which is a popular destination for surfers, hikers, and horseback riders. This is the third incarnation of On Location in Malibu: Paintings by the California Art Club. The first exhibition was held in 1999 and the second in 2003. Each exhibition has been substantially different, offering new and fresh views of Malibu. The participants in each of these exhibitions varied with the makeup of the California Art Club, which adds new members each year, chosen from the best contemporary realist artists in the state.

Since the late 1980s, there has been a revival of interest in contemporary realism across the nation. The California Art Club has played a major role in this trend by offering artists support and exhibition opportunities. In California, the resurgence of realist art assumed the form of a renewed attention paid to landscape painting. Since statehood, art in California has revolved around the land. People have been drawn to California because of its unique environment and abundant sunshine. The current members of the California Art Club are dedicated to using their talents to record and interpret the impressive scenery of the Golden State.

The exhibition features nearly 60 works of art by 51 artists. The artists are Peter Adams, Douglas Ball, Lisa Bloomingdale Bell, Gerald Brommer, John Budicin, Marcia Burtt, Cathey Cadieux, Ron Chesley, Jackie Chiu, John Cosby, David Damm, Karl Dempwolf, Dennis Doheny, Esther Engelman, David C. Gallup, Lynn Gertenbach, Ken Goldman, Dan Goozeé, Carolyn Hesse-Low, Debra Huse, David Jenks, Sharon Burkett Kaiser, Peggi Kroll-Roberts, Calvin Liang, Jeremy Lipking, Simon Lok, Joseph Mendez, Eric Merrell, Stephen Eugene Mirich, Michael Obermeyer, Joel Philips, Daniel W. Pinkham, Scott Prior, Julio J. Pro, Gerald Rahm, Carl Ramsey, Jeff Richards, Victor Riesau, Ray Roberts, Junn Roca, Gayle Garner Roski, Sergio Sanchez, Frank M. Serrano, Herb Seymour, Michael Situ, W. Jason Situ, Alexey Steele, David Yisun Wei, Joan Horsfall Young, Joseph Yuhasz, and Charles Zlatkoff.

These artists live in communities throughout the Southland -- and beyond. They represent a diversity of backgrounds and life experiences. The youngest are in their early twenties, the oldest are in their sixties. Some learned to paint in art schools, others in universities. Some came to paint landscapes from earlier careers in design, illustration, and advertising; others were largely self-taught. They all share a passion for using paint to capture the scenic wonders of the world around us.

Founded in 1909, the California Art Club is the oldest art association in the state and one of the oldest continually operating art organizations in the country. The mission of the Club, which is headquartered in Pasadena, is to promote the values and traditions of representational art. In addition to producing and promoting art exhibitions, the Club provides educational opportunities in realist art.
