Contemporary Art from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation
The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, will present Contemporary Art from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation from August 6 through September 24, 2000.
This special selection of contemporary art from the Weisman Art Foundation features works never before seen at the Weisman Museum at Pepperdine.
Some of the internationally renowned artists on view include Christo, Jim Dine, Joe Goode, Red Grooms, David Hockney, Edward Ruscha and Frank Stella.
Frederick R. Weisman, the noted Los Angeles collector, acquired these works because they captured the vitality of the postwar art scene. Weisman was a generous philanthropist who helped found two museums bearing his name. The first, at Pepperdine University, was dedicated in 1992. The second, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, opened in 1993.
The art in this exhibition has been on loan to the Weisman Museum in Minneapolis since 1993. Some pieces have never before been exhibited in Los Angeles; others have not been seen in Los Angeles in seven years.
Regarded as one of the top 200 art collectors in the world, Frederick Weisman acquired art with a bold and creative vision. He favored works that were vibrant, colorful and thought provoking. Works in this exhibition reflect vital trends in the contemporary art scene from Pop Art to Postmodernism.
This exhibition celebrates the inauguration of Andrew K. Benton as Seventh President of Pepperdine University on September 23, 2000. Works will be on view in the Gregg G. Juarez Gallery, West Gallery and Mezzanine Gallery in the Frederick R, Weisman Museum of Art. Funding is provided by the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation.
