Beyond the Mountain: The Contemporary American Landscape

"Beyond the Mountain: The Contemporary American Landscape," an exhibition which brings together 26 contemporary painters and over 40 recent works for a broad survey of the diverse and energetic approaches to enduring American landscape painting traditions, will show at the Muskegon Museum of Art February 27 through April 5, 2000.

Organized by Pamela Auchincloss Arts Management Services, New York, and curated by Michael Klein, an independent scholar recently appointed Microsoft Corporation's curator of corporate collections, the exhibition includes works by Roger Brown, Rackstraw Downes, Alex Katz, Nancy Mitchnik, Ellen Phelan, Wayne Thiebaud, Helen Miranda Wilson and others. The exhibition asks, in the curator's words, "What has become of the landscape tradition in American painting, that tradition that is so much a part and parcel of the American identity, myth, and the perception of the American continent?"

Beyond the Mountains has a special resonance with the museum's permanent collection which includes a number of excellent 19th and early 20th century American landscape paintings--offering an opportunity to consider anew important works by William Louis Sonntag, Ralph Albert Blakelock, George Inness, DeWitt Parshall, and George Bellows.

Beyond the Mountains comes to the Muskegon Museum of Art directly from its opening at Tulane University, New Orleans. The exhibition then travels to the Boise Art Museum, the Ft. Wayne Museum of Art, the Lyman Allyn Museum in New London, Connecticut, and closes in Pittsburgh. The exhibition's appearance in Muskegon is made possible by a grant from the Roger & Peggy Schwer Fund, Community Foundation for Muskegon County.
